On the weekend of July 9/10th 2016, Dr Dina Borges and the Bournemouth Seven Days Adventist Church’s Community Health Outreach Team once again in the Sovereign Centre in Boscombe offered a free of charge Health Screening service to members of the local community.
Members of the public were assessed for Height, Weight, Body Mass Index (BMI), Body Fat, Blood Pressure (as one of the Indicators of Heart Disease), Blood Glucose (for Type 2 Diabetes), and Spirometry (Respiratory function). Following this the team offered a Life Style analysis and consultation with a General Physician or Pharmacist.
Dr Borges comments “In the three years we have been doing this, we have been able to screen over 1000 members of the local community. Of these just under 5% we had to refer back to their local Medical Practitioner because we have found abnormal readings that required further evaluation.”
“During our latest event in Boscombe, we were able to screen another 154 people of which 23 had to be referred for immediate follow up. This figure has surprised us and may in a way reflect the fact that more and more people have hidden health issues that they are not aware of.”
I’d like to thank the management team of the Sovereign Shopping Centre for their commitment with the community and allowing the Bournemouth SDA Church’s Health Team to use the premises in Sovereign Centre in Boscombe.
We look forward to returning before the end of the year.
